The LAFPC is a collaborative network working to make Southern California a good food region for everyone- where food is healthy, affordable, fair and sustainable. Through policy creation and cooperative relationships, its goals are to reduce hunger, improve public health, increase equity in our communities, create good jobs, stimulate local economic activity, and foster environmental stewardship.
In September 2009, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the creation of the Los Angeles Food Policy Task Force at the 30th Anniversary Celebration for the First Farmers’ Market in Los Angeles County. The Task Force convened in November 2009 and was charged with developing a Good Food policy agenda for Los Angeles – food that is healthy, affordable, fair and sustainable. The Task Force met with over 200 people, conducted roundtables and listening sessions, and developed a report called Good Food for All Agenda with 55 specific action steps around six priority action areas, with a recommendation to establish a Food Policy Council to help advance the agenda. In July 2010, the Los Angeles Food Policy Task Force presented the “Good Food for All Agenda” to Mayor Villaraigosa.
The Los Angeles Food Policy Council (LAFPC) was created as a result. The LAFPC held its first meeting in January 2011 and the Working Group meetings began in February 2011. The mission of the LAFPC is to advance the six priority action areas identified in the “Good Food for All Agenda”.
