CANASTAS DEL CAMPO
Our Los Angeles immigrant communities are facing an unprecedented threat in 2025. Warrantless detainments, imprisonment, and deportation have spread fear across L.A. Many community members have been unable to work, earn income, and access food.
To meet the increasing need for secure and healthy sources of food LAFPC has pivoted its foundational Farm Fresh LA program through Canastas del Campo. Functioning similarly to Farm Fresh LA, Canastas pivots to meet current needs by taking out the CalFresh transaction piece of the program function, operating as a no questions asked grocery distribution program.

Nutrition incentive programs not only provide greater access to healthy food but are also an opportunity for economic growth.
When you make a $5 CalFresh purchase, you receive a free bundle of produce valued at $20

Canastas gets 5lbs of fresh produce with supplemental items such as milk and eggs that we purchase directly from our store partners to community members referred by trusted organizations.
This structure allows Canastas to support people in need of groceries for their families, as well as farmers and store partners.

The program leverages LAFPC’s relationships with multigenerational corner store owners of color, fostered through our internationally recognized program, the Healthy Neighborhood Market Network. The incentivized locally-grown produce bundles have a retail value of about $20, but CalFresh shoppers become eligible to purchase these bundles at no cost when they spend at least $5 of CalFresh benefits, with the incentive costs being covered by our generous sponsors. By partnering with LAFPC’s Farm Fresh LA, stores are able to source locally grown produce and offer it directly within communities most affected by food apartheid. The program began in 2021, and 33,000 pounds of fresh produce have been distributed through this program to date.
Participating Stores

We reside, work, and cultivate food
on unceded Indigenous homelands.
We acknowledge and honor the descendants of the Tongva, Kizh, and Gabrieleño peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles Basin and the Southern Channel Islands). We pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.
As part of a greater foodshed, we would also like to pay respect to and honor the Chumash, Tataviam, Serrano, Kitanemuk, ʔíviĨuqaletem, Acjachemen, Payómkawichum, and any other tribal group possibly not mentioned. As a Food Policy Council for Los Angeles we recognize this land acknowledgment is limited and engagement is an ongoing process of learning and accountability.
